MY RATING: 3。5 Overall， I think this book is a comprehensive overview of some essential business practices and methodology （that being said from someone who does not have an educational background or experience in business）; however， I do have to say that from flipping through the book， prior to reading， I feel a little mislead。 I anticipated much more graphic representations （more of an infographic-type experience） than the heavy-text that actually pervades this book。 Personally， I would have e MY RATING: 3。5 Overall， I think this book is a comprehensive overview of some essential business practices and methodology （that being said from someone who does not have an educational background or experience in business）; however， I do have to say that from flipping through the book， prior to reading， I feel a little mislead。 I anticipated much more graphic representations （more of an infographic-type experience） than the heavy-text that actually pervades this book。 Personally， I would have enjoyed more graphic representations of the information and less text。 I also would like to add that， although some of the text deals with explaining essential business concepts， a good portion focuses on using examples from prominent business leaders and businesses。 While I can appreciate the benefits of offering real-world examples， I felt like doing so short changed the actual concept; one， because they spend more time on the example than the concept， and， two， because the example lead me to narrow my view of the idea to the specific instance they provide。 It also did not seem to make much sense organizationally since they have boxes within the chapters， which seem to be devoted to sharing examples of leaders in the industry。 At the very least， I will say the book offers graphs and charts of the most essential concepts （even though most don't amount to much more than mind maps with the text broken down into smaller sentences）。 All in all， I do think this book is an great entry point into an entire discipline and includes a good mix of history and theory， but I think it could be modernized for 21st century nonfiction readers who are now more attuned to visual representations of information and ideas。 。。。more

This is the first book of this series I have read。 I have long had my eyes on Big Ideas simply Explained and thought I'd try my hand with a topic that's hot right now: business。It took me some time to finish it and rightly so。 It's a dense piece of writing。Before reading， I would suggest taking some aspects into account， like the fact that the business topic is vast， the management theories are diverse and how such a book is meant to give you an ample landscape of what business is。 By any and al This is the first book of this series I have read。 I have long had my eyes on Big Ideas simply Explained and thought I'd try my hand with a topic that's hot right now: business。It took me some time to finish it and rightly so。 It's a dense piece of writing。Before reading， I would suggest taking some aspects into account， like the fact that the business topic is vast， the management theories are diverse and how such a book is meant to give you an ample landscape of what business is。 By any and all means， do not look for an in depth "How To" approach inside。Probably the most practical way to approach this book would be to skim through the content and summary， then go through the chapters one by one， taking in the titles and graphics first and after that diving into the explanations。 As stated above， the book is not a manual， but rather exposes the history and theory of the ideas presented。 I'd say it's ok to jump through some chapters if they don't pose any interest to you， as long as you make sure you got the main idea from them。 The big font used for these together with the simplified graphics makes it a child's play to understand the core of what's being said。Overall I found it very useful。 If you have any business knowledge so far and what to take a step back to understand the big picture， this is your book。 Aspects such as leveraging and growth， mergers and marketing strategies will become a lot clearer afterwards。If you are looking for info from a startup perspective， probably chapters 20-43， 62， 172， as well as Marketing and Finance ManagementI don't agree completely with the format but that may just be my perspective， coupled with the reader I use。 。。。more

First off， this is a textbook， so it was pretty densely packed with information。 That being said， I found it really enjoyable to read （in short bursts） and a solid overview of how businesses work with anecdotes and historical examples。 I was looking for a book to read to fill in some gaps of the basics and I believe this did the job quite well。
